uncertain, seeing them grow into unique human beings with a blend of familiar and entirely new quirks. There are the bear hugs (requested or not) and the steady expansion of your own patience, empathy, and resilience that motherhood seems to demand.

Full disclosure: I’m not a mom. However, I am an aunt to eleven nieces and nephews and fifteen great nieces and nephews – and counting. Over the years, I’ve had a front row seat to the lives of new moms as they, and their children, grow and transition over time. I love watching personalities emerge, passions take place, and paths begin to form. No two journeys look the same. As an aunt, my role has happily included cheering from the sidelines and spoiling whenever possible.

Becoming a parent for the first time is undeniably joyful. And, as joyous as it is, it also ushers in profound change: physical and hormonal shifts, identity changes sometimes intensified by pausing a career, fewer spontaneous connections with friends, and moments of isolation can all surface. Add anxiety around raising a child and additional complexity when adopting, and it’s clear this transition carries real weight.

I’ll never forget what one friend shared with me: “Having the baby went fine. It wasn’t until we were loading this new life into the car seat to drive home for the first time that it hit me – Yikes. This bundle of joy is my responsibility. I hope I don’t screw it up.”

In this role mom is the primary caregiver, an awesome responsibility that arrives without a handbook.

Then some experience motherhood with multiple children. I can’t count the number of times friends and family have said that once you’re outnumbered, life can feel overwhelming. This phase often demands shifts in household routines and childcare responsibilities just to keep everything moving. The role of example-setter, organizer, and chief cheerleader expands dramatically.

My mom (along with dad) took on many roles: personal driver and driving instructor, chef, housekeeper, tutor, lawn keeper and the like. Out of necessity, she became especially skilled at delegation, a survival skill that many moms master earlier than they might expect.

Then there are the teenage and early adult years. My husband’s mother raised three boys. When asked whether she missed having a daughter she replied “No, I’m good with three boys. I would never want to raise a mini-me.”

These years call for deep mentoring, steady coaching, and an ongoing practice of letting go particularly since brains don’t fully mature until the mid to late twenties, with recent research suggesting development may even extend into the thirties.

When my sibs and I left home for the last time, we carried with us a solid set of life skills: cooking, cleaning, laundry, landscaping, gardening, basic auto care, financial literacy, organization, communicating, adaptability, conflict resolution, and respect (essential skills in a household of ten).

That transition ushers in the empty-nester phase for moms. While it can take time to adjust to a quieter household (and convert a bedroom into she-shed), it also offers a meaningful opportunity to rediscover interests, refresh passions, renew friendships, and explore what this next stage of life might hold.

So, as you celebrate or think fondly of your own mom this Mother’s Day, take a moment to recognize the other moms in your life as well as the transitions they may be navigating.

A Coaching Reflection: What Motherhood Teaches Us About Transition

Motherhood may be the most dynamic leadership journey there is. It demands continuous reinvention, adaptability without guarantees, and resilience built one season at a time.

Across every phase, a pattern emerges:

Leading without a clear roadmap

Making decisions with imperfect information

Holding responsibility long before feeling “ready”

Letting go, again and again

Redefining identity again as circumstances change

These are not just parenting skills. They are life skills. Career skills. Leadership skills.

Questions to ponder this Mother’s Day:

Which phase of motherhood, or support of others, am I currently navigating?

What is this season asking of me now and how is that different from before?

Where might I offer myself (or another mom) more compassion during change?

Who around me may be quietly navigating a significant transition?

Mother’s Day isn’t just about celebration. It’s an opportunity t

o see the invisible transitions and acknowledge the strength it takes to walk through them.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you moms out there! (I love you, Mom!)

Thanks for reading! The snow had lingered for months and so had her mood. She moved through her days on autopilot, work, home, repeat. Evenings blurred together. Nothing was wrong exactly, but something had gone quiet in her and nothing felt energizing.

She told herself it was a low-grade funk, easy to normalize. Winter does this, she thought. You just wait it out. The air felt different, cool but no longer sharp. On the first mild morning, Ellen opened a window she’d kept shut all winter. Fresh air moved through the room, carrying the faint scent of thawing earth. Later that day, she chose a longer route home so she could walk instead of drive. She noticed the wet sidewalks, the birds returning, the light lingering just a little longer.

It wasn’t dramatic, but it was enough. Over the next week, she made a few small intentional shifts:

She took a walk outside every day, even if only for ten minutes.

She cleared one cluttered surface in her home that had bothered her for months.

She reached out to a friend she hadn’t seen all winter and made a plan.

Instead of waiting for her energy to return, Ellen responded as if it might and let her actions lead. Spring didn’t fix everything, but it gave her a cue. A signal that waiting was no longer the only option.

Phase Three: The Results — A Quiet Renewal

Gradually, her mood lifted and the funk loosened its grip. Ellen felt more awake in her own life. Her energy began to return, not all at once, but steadily. Work felt lighter. She felt more present and willing to engage. Smaller joys registered like longer evenings, open windows, and laughter that came more easily.

What changed wasn’t just the season, it was Ellen’s relationship to transition. She realized that getting out of a funk, whether emotional, professional, or personal, is one of life’s most frequent transitions. It doesn’t require a major change. It requires noticing when the season shifts and choosing to shift with it.

Spring offered her a reminder that renewal often begins quietly. With attention and movement. With permission to step forward instead of staying still.

We often think transitions have to be big to matter, new jobs, new roles, major decisions, retirement. But some of the most important transitions are the internal ones: moving from stuck to curious, from drained to engaged, from waiting to participating again in our own lives.

Spring doesn’t just change the landscape. It invites us to notice where we’re ready to change too. And sometimes, that’s all it takes.

Happy Spring!

NAVIGATE DOUBLE-TROUBLE TRANSITIONS WITHOUT LOSING YOUR FOOTING

Some changes announce themselves loudly.

Carol Bergeron

Some changes announce themselves loudly. A role, routine, sense of certainty, or version of yourself is closing. That ending deserves recognition, yet many of us rush past it, eager to “get back to normal.” Healthy transitions tend to follow a rhythm:

Acknowledging what’s ending and letting go in a productive and meaningful way

Allowing space for the emotions that surface

Exploring new possibilities

Choosing and stepping into what’s next

When multiple changes overlap, this rhythm can feel rushed or distorted. You may still be processing one ending while another begins. That’s when it’s easy to feel disoriented or wonder why you’re not “handling it better.”

The Hidden Challenge of Double‑Trouble Transitions

What makes layered transitions especially tricky is that they often amplify each other emotionally. A career shift can stir questions of identity just as a family change reshapes your sense of belonging. A move can disrupt your support system at the very moment you need it most.

And here’s the hard truth: even when you could anticipate one change, the emotional weight of two simultaneous shifts is rarely predictable. So instead of aiming for control, the real goal becomes resilience.

How to Soften the Landing When Life Changes Stack Up

While you can’t control every change, you can reduce the shock when several collide.

Recognize what could be changing early

Pay attention to subtle signals that change may be coming. Consider casual conversations in which you express concern, personal restlessness, and observed organizational shifts. Naming and discussing what might happen gives you breathing room and often invites support before you need it. You’ll feel less overwhelmed when it actually occurs.

Anticipate your emotional response

Past transitions are teachers. Reflect on how you’ve reacted before. What emotions surfaced? What helped and what didn’t? Emotional preparedness won’t eliminate discomfort, but it can prevent you from being paralyzed by it.

Do light touch transition planning

Think of this as scenario planning for life. You don’t need a perfect roadmap. Consider a few things early:

What feels most urgent?

What might need to wait?

What options are available to you?

What are some small steps that restore your sense of self?

Even minimal planning can help you move forward instead of getting stuck.

Case and point: A couple of clients in my retirement life design program faced unexpected layoff right alongside their planned transition into retirement. Instead of getting stuck in the surprise of it all, they paused, processed, and leaned into the transition plans they had already created. That structure grounded them and helped them move forward with clarity, confidence, and intention.

Hold tight to grounding routines

Transitions tend to disrupt schedules and routines are often the first things to go. Ironically, they’re also what help us stay balanced. Whether it’s movement, reflection, connection, or rest, maintaining even a simplified version of your routines creates stability when everything else feels fluid.

Let support be a strength, not a last resort

Double-trouble transitions aren’t meant to be navigated alone. Conversations, reading, coaching, courses, or therapy can all support change more thoughtfully and remind you that you’re not the only one navigating complex layers of personal growth.

Transitions may arrive in pairs or even clusters, but they also reveal your adaptability, wisdom, and capacity to grow beyond who you’ve been.

When life piles on, it’s not a sign you’re off track. It may be an invitation to step more fully into what’s next with awareness, support, self‑care, and preliminary transition planning.

Carol Bergeron helps career achievers unlock their legacy and embrace what’s next whether that’s stepping into high-stakes leadership, amplifying their executive brand, developing the next generation of top talent, or making the leap to retirement that’s just as fulfilling and brilliant as their career.

Explore coaching programs, books, and workbooks: https://bergeronassociates.com/home/resources/

© Copyright 2026 Bergeron Associates. When you create a simple, repeatable ritual you’re sending a powerful signal to your brain: “It’s safe to relax now.” Examples include brewing some tea, stretching or yoga, journaling, or sitting quietly while listening to music. These routines aren’t just comforting; they’re backed by science. Predictable rituals help your nervous system shift from alertness to calm, making it easier to process emotions and recover from the day’s stress.

It’s worth noting that rituals are more effective than habits in shifting to a state of calmness. That’s because habits are often performed without thinking about them. While rituals are intentional, they require thought, and thus better at prompting emotional resilience.

What Makes a Ritual Effective?

Consistency over complexity: You don’t need an elaborate routine. At least 5 minutes of a familiar activity at a common time and place can help your brain recognize it’s time to unwind. It will take on average about 21 days to create the routine.

Flexibility is key: Life happens! If your evening gets disrupted, have a “short version” of your ritual ready. The goal is to keep the pattern, not perfection.

Mark the transition: Deliberately signal the shift from day to evening. Perhaps listening to some favorite tunes, reading a chapter in the novel du jour, or simply sitting quietly in a dim lit room. This helps your mind let go of the day’s worries.

Try it Out Tonight

First, you’ll need to identify one reliable evening time slot for the ritual. Think right after work closes, before or after dinner, or immediately before bed. Add your 5-minute ritual such as:

Stretch for 5 minutes, focusing on slow, gentle movements and deep breathing.

Write down 3 things you’re grateful for or do a quick “brain dump” of lingering thoughts.

Play a favorite song or light a candle with a calming scent.

Sip a warm drink in your favorite mug, in the same cozy spot each night.

Stabilize your new ritual by repeating it for at least 21 days before adding new elements.

A Coach’s Encouragement

Remember, transitions are part of life’s rhythm. You can’t always control what changes, but you can create a pocket of predictability in your evenings. Over time, these rituals become anchors that help you feel steadier, calmer, and more resilient no matter what life throws your way.

So tonight, give yourself permission to slow down. Choose one small ritual and let it be your invitation to rest. Your future self will thank you.

Explore coaching programs, books, and workbooks: https://bergeronassociates.com/home/resources/

© Copyright 2026 Bergeron Associates. Grab a cozy drink, settle into your favorite chair, and ask: What goals did I accomplish in 2025? Maybe you crushed a big milestone, or maybe you simply made it through some tough days. Both count. Every step forward fuels your intent and direction for the coming year.

Let’s go deeper. This isn’t just about ticking boxes, it’s about personal growth. When life throws change our way, it prompts us into transition, whether we’re ready or not. Some changes are in plain view, others sneak up on us, and some we never see coming. Each one shapes us in ways we might not notice until we look back.

Here’s your invitation: Think about the changes you encountered over the last twelve months. Pick the one that impacted you most, and reflect on these questions:

How did this change affect you? Did it break up your routine, challenge your beliefs, shake up your sense of self, or open new doors?

What ended for you and what did you gain from that ending? Sometimes, letting go is the hardest part. But endings often make space for unexpected gifts.

How did you figure out “what’s next?” Did you leap, tiptoe, or stumble into your new chapter? What helped you decide?

Who did you turn to for support and why? Maybe it was a friend, a mentor, or even a community. Support can come from surprising places.

After exploring your options, what path did you choose? Was it the obvious one, or did you surprise yourself?

How did you know it was the right path? Sometimes it’s a gut feeling, sometimes it’s a slow realization.

Did you celebrate your new beginning? Big or small, every fresh start deserves a little joy and it’s not too late to celebrate.

What advice would you give your younger self, looking back? What wisdom did you learn that you wish you’d known sooner?

How did you personally grow from the experience? Maybe you became more resilient, more compassionate, or simply more yourself. Personal growth often hides in the messiest moments.

Why does this matter before the holidays? Because reflection isn’t just a year-end ritual. It’s a gift you give yourself. It helps you enter the new year with clarity, gratitude, a sense of purpose, and a positive outlook. Sharing your stories, lessons, and hopes can spark meaningful conversations around the holiday dinner table, deepen connections, and inspire others to embrace learnings from their own transitions.

So, as you prepare for the celebrations ahead, remember: every transition is a chance to grow. Honor your transition journey, celebrate your progress, and look forward to the adventures waiting in 2026. And if you feel like sharing, your story might just be the encouragement someone else needs.

Wishing you a joyful, reflective, and inspiring holiday season!

HOLIDAYS: THE SMORGASBORD OF TRANSITIONS

Ready or not, Thanksgiving Thursday is barreling toward us like a gravy boat on wheels, officially launching the holiday season!

Carol Bergeron

Ready or not, Thanksgiving Thursday is barreling toward us like a gravy boat on wheels, officially launching the holiday season! It’s that magical time when the air is filled with the scent of delicious food, routines are exchanged for unstructured time, and you get to reconnect with people you haven’t seen in a while. The best part? Thanksgiving is a holiday you can celebrate with anyone. It’s a time when friends become family, and family become friends. The holidays aren’t all pumpkin pie, cozy sweaters, and sitting in front of a roaring fire sipping hot apple cider. There’s a dash of chaos sprinkled in, too! Think: traveling on the busiest days of the year, racing truckers delivering last-minute groceries, elbowing your way through the farmers’ market, guests who RSVP at the eleventh hour, and the insatiable demand for stove top burners and the oven. Sound familiar?

Welcome to the holiday jungle where you may encounter challenges and transitions like:

Tradition Overload

Challenge: Balancing old traditions with new ones can feel like juggling cranberries.

Remedy: Add one new tradition each year! This way, you keep things fresh without losing the classics. Consider a vote on which tradition gets the boot next year.

Host Hustle

Challenge: Trying to do everything yourself can turn you into a tormented turkey. On the other hand, offering guests too little guidance when sharing responsibilities can tangle roles like holiday lights.

Remedy: Share the load. Team up with your co-hosts, make a plan, encourage everyone to contribute to the celebration, whether it’s a new dish, game, or playlist. Just don’t ask Aunt Ava to make the stuffing.

Passing the Baton

Challenge: Handing over hosting duties can be trickier than passing the squash soup without a spill.

Remedy: Offer to be a behind-the-scenes mentor, helper, or official taste-tester. Let your successor shine but be ready to rescue the gingered yams without fanfare if needed.

Family Dynamics

Challenge: The smells, tastes, sights, sounds, and people you gather with over the holidays can stir up old family vibes including the ones you thought were buried with last year’s wishbone.

Remedy: Prep by identifying triggers, setting boundaries, and planning your escape route like the bathroom as a haven. During the festivities, practice self-care, redirect spicy conversations, and take a timeout if needed. Afterward, reflect on your personal growth and reward yourself with an extra piece of pie.

Life’s Big Changes

Challenge: Returning to school, starting a new job, retiring, or other life shifts can make the holidays feel like a whole new ballgame.

Remedy: Use the holiday as a check-in. Celebrate progress, swap stories, and gather fresh perspectives. Who knows? Your cousin’s advice might prove to be useful. And support others when confiding in you about their transitions.

Grieving the Loss of a Loved One

Challenge: Missing someone special? The holidays can surface grief.

Remedy: Honor their memory by sharing stories, cooking their favorite dish, playing their favorite song, lighting a candle, routing for their favorite football team, or raising a toast in remembrance. Healing often happens through celebration of life.

Absent Guests

Challenge: Not everyone can make it to the table, and sometimes the holiday feels a little emptier.

Remedy: Pick up the phone! A quick call or video chat can bring distant loved ones into the celebration. Bonus points for creative group selfies.

The Much-Needed Pause

Challenge: Life can be hectic, and the holidays can feel like a whirlwind too. Sometimes you need a break from the break.

Remedy: Bake some relaxation and “me time” into the holiday. Whether it’s a nature walk, a bathtub soak, meditation, or a nap, make sure everyone gets a chance and has a space to recharge. Remember: even Santa takes a cookie break.

So, what holiday hurdles are you anticipating this year? Or maybe you’ve conquered some in the past? Share your stories and tips. Let’s make this season the most joyful (and least stressful) one yet. And if all else fails, just blame the turkey.

Learn more about navigating life’s transitions by:

Exploring upcoming small group coaching programs: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/6-session-retirement-life-design-program-registration-1458536615279?aff=odcleoeventsincollection

© Copyright 2025 Bergeron Associates. The words “habit” and “routine” often get used interchangeably, but they’re different. Habits are those automatic behaviors you do without even thinking, like being on autopilot. You don’t actively think about your habits – you often just do them, and they feel natural and effortless. Routines, on the other hand, involve a series of actions carried out in a particular way and require more deliberate effort.

Examples of habits? Waking up and showering at the same time every morning or reading the paper over breakfast. Evening habits might include clearing the dinner table, locking the doors, and pouring a glass of water for your bedside before retiring each night.

Examples of routines? Calling Mom Tuesday and Thursday mornings, weekly date nights, brushing your dog’s coat or teeth every other day, or working out, playing an instrument, or reading for an hour before bed several times each week.

Establishing consistent habits involves intentional, frequent, often daily behaviors. Yet, these new practices can feel awkward at first, making them susceptible to abandonment. This is why habit trackers have grown in popularity; they provide a way to support the conversion of routines into true habits by keeping them top of mind.

Increase your success rate of creating new habits by stacking or layering one habit onto another. Here’s a simple process to help you out, with an example where the desired habit is to go for a walk every day.

<a class="image-link image2 You’re thrilled about your role, you get along great with your team, and you see countless opportunities to make a difference and grow as a leader. But how did you know you were ready to choose this path forward? Let’s dive into the signs that pointed you in the right direction:

You had a clear and positive vision of your future, and it was amazing.

You felt a strong sense of the leader you were meant to be.

You started building new routines and habits that aligned with your goals and life.

Opportunities that supported your goals began to appear everywhere.

Your needs are being fulfilled, and you felt a renewed sense of energy and optimism.

You were a bit nervous but also excited to get started.

You were ready to leave the past behind, taking its lessons with you.

Congratulations! You’ve entered phase 3 – new beginnings – on your transition journey. This is a time when you recognize your path forward and fully integrate it into your lifestyle.

But what led you here? Let’s rewind a bit.

Phase 1 – Endings

Your journey began when your previous employer made staffing cuts, and your project, along with your job, was eliminated. In this phase, you had to unpack the change and its impact on you. Initially, you worried about paying the bills, and feelings of fear, panic, disappointment, and anger set in. You mourned the loss of your most prized leadership role to date and the high-performing team you had nurtured.

You worked through these emotions and accepted what happened. Reflecting on your past role and choices, you gained insights that paved the way for figuring out your future.

Phase 2 – Experimenting

Next up was exploring options and experimenting. You imagined your next role and asked yourself important questions: How do you want to show up as a leader? What are your superpowers and desired professional challenges? What problems do you want to solve? What impact do you want to have? What expectations do you have of a new employer?

With these answers, you set your goals and considered several options:

Launch a job search for the same level job in the same industry and geographic area. This posed the least risk but felt like “been there, done that.”

Launch a job search for a bigger leadership role in the same industry. You had been developing yourself for promotion, and people noticed. Why not go for the next big professional challenge?

Option 2 but in a new geographic location. This added the complexity of relocation and creating a new local group of friends, which could increase stress and distract you from your new job.

Change careers. A couple of careers appealed to you, and your sister-in-law recently made a big career shift making you feel optimistic. This option would require additional research before jumping into job search mode.

You decided to take on options 2 and 4 at the same time. For option 4, you started informational interviews with people in the careers you were considering. However, you quickly realized those jobs weren’t nearly as exciting as you initially thought. The effort to update your marketing materials to highlight your transferable skills and develop the requisite skills seemed daunting and time-consuming. Nor was it practical for short-term income needs. But you did note the skills you’d like to develop to make this option viable in the future.

Meanwhile, you focused on option 2 by updating your resume and starting to network. You were pleased with the interest and interviews it generated. Your dedication and hard work paid off, leading you to your new full-time role which you fully integrated into your lifestyle. Congratulations on successfully navigating your transition journey.

Beneficial Pearls of Wisdom

While the transition journey flows via the three phases, the phases can blend into each other, and the associated emotions can swing like a pendulum.

Life is full of transitions, and we may find ourselves in multiple phases simultaneously due to various changes that impact us.

Despite their challenges, transitions offer opportunities for personal growth and resilience.

Understanding the transition journey and its nuances, empowers us to recognize where we are and what we can do best move forward.

So, what have you noticed about your past transition journeys? What pearls of wisdom would you add to the list? Sometimes, all the self-help videos, articles, books and lessons from past experiences simply aren’t enough. That’s where a coach may be an ideal solution. So, today, let’s dive into some frequently asked questions about one-to-one vs group coaching.

What do group and one-to-one coaching have in common?

Both group and one-to-one coaching are all about teaming up with someone to help you move forward, even if you’re not quite sure where you’re headed at first. While a coach doesn’t provide all the answers, they’ll ask thought-provoking questions that help uncover solutions. A coach will offer fresh perspectives, challenge your viewpoints, help you align your thoughts and feelings, act as an accountability partner, and celebrate your successes with you.

Why do people turn to coaching?

There are so many reasons why people turn to coaching every day. You might be feeling stuck and unable to find a path forward. Maybe you’re looking for more balance in your life. What about upgrading or developing new skills, preparing for a promotion, on-boarding at a new company, or launching a job search or career shift? Perhaps you have a big goal in mind but need clarity on some big decisions. Maybe you are feeling like you’re underutilized and have more to give. Or maybe you are contemplating the next phase in life like retirement, and you want a holistic approach to the emotional, social, lifestyle and health challenges that converge at once. Whatever the reason, coaching can help you find your path of transition.

Will you be better served by one-to-one or group coaching?

That is a personal decision as both one-to-one and group coaching are effective. Here are some things to consider:

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" This might take the form of vision, goals, and definitely some outcomes to monitor and measure success. This step can be so incredibly uplifting because you’re sparking the light at the end of the tunnel.

Brainstorming then evaluating options. Next up, it’s time to brainstorm and evaluate your options. For each option, understand the risks and resource needs, notice what feels right (head and heart), and recognize which options are most likely to fuel your ideal outcomes. Vet and prioritize these options, then clarify what success looks like at key milestones. This step can be energizing and empowering as you get closer to your new beginning. Sometimes it can also become off-putting, especially if your options list is long or some options require more resources than you have.

Experimenting with your short list. Now, let’s get hands-on! Begin implementing the top option from your short list. You know the drill; break it down into actionable steps. You’ll know if it’s working because you can compare actual and expected outcomes. If the top option doesn’t fit, move on to the next or work on a few options simultaneously if it’s feasible. You might find it helpful to combine different options to discover what best suits your needs. The truth is, this step can get messy with starts and stops, wins and losses, but that’s all part of the journey.

Acknowledging and processing your emotions. Experimenting with different options can bring about a variety of emotions, including uncertainty, disorientation, confusion, impatience and even frustration because progress is slow. The best thing you can do is to give yourself permission to normalize these feelings and remind yourself that this phase and its emotions are temporary. So, be sure to celebrate small victories to bring more positivity to your journey.

Practice good self-care. Practice good self-care by surrounding yourself with your tribe of caring peeps – friends, family, and folks who have been through the transition you’re experiencing. Remind yourself of your vision to get re-energized. Maintain some level of routine or structure in other parts of your life that ignite positivity to help balance things out.

Choosing your new beginning. With the trial and error of options behind you, knowledge that your chosen option satisfies your desired outcomes, and the positive feelings it ignites, you are ready to move on to phase 3 – New Beginnings.

I challenge you to try out these steps of phase 2 – Experimentation. Embrace the journey, and remember, every step you take brings you closer to your new beginning. Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below. Let’s support each other on our transition journeys.

Learn more about navigating life’s transitions; explore upcoming small group coaching programs: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/bergeron-associates-13715940172#collections

© Copyright 2025 Bergeron Associates. This is where you get to try things out before you decide which direction to go. Choice is awesome, right? But let’s be honest: too many choices can feel downright paralyzing.

I remember when I tried to furnish my first apartment. I headed to Gardner, MA, where there are endless discount furniture outlets – seriously, it felt like I was wandering through football fields of couches and chairs. I had a tight budget and a list of must-haves (couch, kitchen table, bed frame), but no real clue how to choose. I hadn’t thought about what sort of vibe I wanted – what feelings I wanted my home to have, what colors or styles would suit me, or even if things would fit in my space. The result? I bought a couch that, honestly, I regretted within a year. If only I’d have had some kind of vision or mood board to guide me! It would have saved me some headaches, second-guessing, and money.

So, in phase 2 of any transition, it really helps to imagine how you want things to look or feel on the other side. Set some goals, picture your ideal outcomes, and get clear on what matters most to you. Then you can start brainstorming options and notice what feels right. Whether you start with a vision and narrow down the ideas or explore a bunch of options to clarify your vision, trimming the list early on can help you avoid that all-too-familiar sense of being overwhelmed. Fewer choices can lead to less confusion and more confidence. Looking back, I know this would’ve made my furniture selections so much easier!

So, the next time you find yourself at the crossroads of options, just remember: a little daydreaming, envisioning outcomes, and some intentional vetting of ideas can make a world of difference.

Learn more about navigating life’s transitions; explore upcoming small group coaching programs: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/bergeron-associates-13715940172#collections

© Copyright 2025 Bergeron Associates. joining the full-time workforce post-graduation, ending the single life to get married, leaving an employer to take on a new professional challenge – as chapters closing. It might sound counterintuitive, but celebrating these endings can make all the difference. Why? Because when we honor what’s come before, we give ourselves time to soak up the lessons, appreciate how far we’ve come, personally grow, and build up resilience for the road ahead. Plus, it feels good to look back and say, “Yeah, I did that.”

So, how do you throw a proper send-off for an ending? Sometimes it’s loud and festive, like graduation ceremonies or those classic bachelor/bachelorette parties. Other times, it’s more reflective and intimate – maybe a goodbye lunch with colleagues or heartfelt conversations as you step into a new role. And sure, there are tough endings too – like unexpected job loss or saying goodbye to a loved one – but that’s where community support steps in, offering great opportunity to connect, share stories, surface common experiences, laugh, cry, and comfort each other.

Don’t forget the solo rituals, either. Journaling, quiet reflection, or even writing your memoir or a book can help mark the ending and make sense of the mix of emotions that comes with adapting to change.

Our culture loves to tell us to keep moving, chase the next big thing, and never look back. But sometimes, slowing down to really celebrate what’s ending is exactly what we need. It’s not just about letting go – it’s about honoring what’s been and making room for what’s next, all at your own pace.

So, next time you feel a chapter closing, don’t rush. Throw a little celebration – even if it’s just for yourself. You might be surprised at how it clears the way for your next great beginning.

Learn more about navigating life’s transitions; explore upcoming small group coaching programs: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/bergeron-associates-13715940172#collections

© Copyright 2025 Bergeron Associates. You’re not alone. One of the most frequently asked questions about navigating transitions is “How do I process my emotions?” Emotions, rooted in our experiences, have a way of repeating themselves. Processing them is crucial because it ideally precedes and informs the transition path you choose to move forward.

Some emotions are like old friends – positive and welcome. But then there are those pesky, uncomfortable ones that we’d like to avoid. The problem with suppressing emotions is that it can increase our stress levels, reinforce unhealthy responses to similar situations, affect our physical health, and cause us to miss out on important messages. Plus, suppressed emotions can pop out when you least expect them.

Imagine this: Over lunch you confide in a co-worker about your excitement for a six-month expat assignment to lead a project starting in two months. She responds, “Are you sure it is wise to take on that assignment since you don’t have firsthand experience with such a project or its team members?” You feel she’s questioning your leadership talents, treating you like a newbie rather than an experienced peer. You get angry and abruptly change the topic. Later, your internal dialog includes thoughts like “leave it alone”, “her opinion doesn’t matter””, and “she’s just jealous that she wasn’t selected”. Yet, you frequently think about the chat, and your annoyance with the co-worker grows. You stop dining with her and only engage when necessary. While you know you’re overreacting, you don’t understand why and can’t seem to let it go.

In the example, what do unprocessed emotions look like? Tell-tale signs include the inability to recognize or understand feelings, overreacting to the situation, not letting go of the emotions, and repeatedly thinking about the situation.

So, what’s one way to go about processing your emotions?

Find a Safe Space & Uninterrupted Time: Secure a comfortable space free of interruptions. Sit in a comfy chair and calm your mind and body. Relax and breathe deeply to clear your mind.

Visualize the Situation: Close your eyes and visualize the unsettling situation. Tell the story: who, what, where, when. Tap into your senses. What do you see? hear? smell? taste? Note all the feelings you have about the situation and the person involved. Your list will likely be a mix of negative and positive emotions.

Feel Your Feelings: Take the time to feel your feelings. It may take several sessions, so be patient.

Choose to Accept Your Emotions: Review your list of feelings and give yourself permission to accept all of them, even if some seem to conflict. Other than accepting all your feelings, there’s no need to do anything about them.

Be Gentle with Yourself: Allow your inner dialogue to commend yourself for recognizing and feeling your complex mix of emotions.

Give It Time: Let the processing sink in. Once ready, move on to reframing the situation, as it segues to setting goals for a transition path forward.

Processing emotions is so important to forging a path forward. Be kind to yourself and take it one step at a time. And let me know how you make out.

Learn more about navigating life’s transitions; explore upcoming small group coaching programs: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/bergeron-associates-13715940172#collections

© Copyright 2025 Bergeron Associates. Why? Because its impact is usually layered and feels like a roller coaster ride. I remember the jolt of moving from Virginia to Vermont just before my senior year of high school. I had to get used to the colder weather, understand the new area and its quirks, and find new friends during the summer. I needed to meet new teachers and learn how they graded. I had to figure out new social groups and share a room with two of my sisters again. The impact felt endless. Moving at any age is complicated because it brings emotional, social, and lifestyle shifts all at once. The cherry on top? The relocation intersected with my college search.

It wasn’t my first rodeo as I’d relocated several other times in my youth. I wasn’t alone either; my seven siblings quickly became friends because we needed each other. We moved into a new development where all our neighbors were transplants too. So, it was a good summer to feel the pain and share it with others. Letting yourself feel those emotions while gaining support from others in the same boat helped a lot. It makes it easier to carve a path toward a new start.

Today, I see that my relocation experiences helped me strengthen certain skills like being able to handle strong feelings – a sign of resilience – and adjusting smoothly to new people, places, and cultures – truly valuable throughout my consulting and coaching career.

What about you? Our brains are wired for negativity, which was useful back in the day for survival. But today, that negativity can turn into stress, anxiety and a bunch of other not-so-fun emotions. If we don’t keep it in check, we might end up on the “Debbie Downer” path.

One easy way to reframe is using Shirzad Chamine’s “3 Gifts Technique”. It’s all about finding three positive outcomes or gifts from a negatively charged change. The gifts are knowledge, growth, and action (adapted from Chamine’s model). Let’s break it down:

1. Knowledge: What learnings or insights can you gain from this experience that will be valuable in the future?

For example, working 65+ hours per week didn’t shield you from job loss and took away quality time with your family. Moving forward, you plan to set better boundaries between work and home.

2. Growth: How can this situation help you grow? Perhaps develop or strengthen a skill or build resilience?

Ineffective processes and occasional delegation led to long work hours. Now, you aim to strengthen your delegation skills and prioritize continuous process improvement for your future team’s benefit.

3. Action: What new goals or actions will you take from this experience?

Your job search goal is to find a new employer that values employee wellbeing, work-life balance, leadership and employee development, and workflow efficiency. Personally, you intend to be fully present when enjoying precious time with your family.

Think about a change you’re facing or struggled with in the past. What’s the negative impact on you? Now, try to identify three potential gifts from that experience. Have you ever tried this approach? If not, will you give it a go the next time life throws you a curveball?

Give it a shot and see how reframing can transform your outlook!

© Copyright 2025 Bergeron Associates. It’s easy to do, especially given our culture’s focus on quick fixes. But rushing can mean we miss out on addressing all the ways the change affects us, which can have consequences down the road. Here are a few ideas to help you understand how a change impacts you.

Start by reflecting on a few questions:

What is changing or has changed? Why?

How will the change impact you? The impact may be multi-dimensional. Stick with this question until you’ve exhausted your responses. Don’t be surprised to discover both gains and losses resulting from the change.

What are your thoughts and feelings about each of the many ways the change will impact you? Most of us will experience a mix of positive and negative thoughts and feelings about the various layers of impact.

Answering these questions is a crucial first step in creating a transition plan. Though I admit, answering them on your own can be daunting. That’s why reaching out to strong listeners among your family, friends, and coach can be so powerful. Effective listeners are more likely to ask thought-provoking follow-up questions, which can lead to even greater personal insight. The greater the insight, the better your transition plan will be.

Remember, every change is an opportunity for growth. Embrace the journey and seek support as you begin to navigate through to a stronger, more resilient you.

© Copyright 2025 Bergeron Associates. But let’s not forget about “change”. We encounter change all the time – at work, at home, and everywhere else we hang our hats.

Bruce Feiler tells us that these changes lead to transitions every 12 to 18 months for most of us. If you live to be 90, that’s about 60 to 90 transitions in your lifetime. Wow! Feeling overwhelmed? You are not alone. Better understanding three interrelated components can help us and others navigate these transitions more comfortably and confidently.

Change and transition are not the same. Change is an external event or situation that impacts us. For example, it is late June, so school-aged children and their parents are experiencing a transition. The change is the end of the school year, and the impact is the start of summer living. Transition is the journey parents and kids take to grow and move beyond the change and its impact. True, this change occurs annually but the impact and resulting transition may vary from year to year.

Take heart, not all change is the same. Whether personal or professional, large or small, easy or tough, change affects us in unexpected ways and to varying degrees. And change can be a powerful force – sparking new ideas, energy, personal growth and ways of life. However, initially, it might trip us up, slow us down, or stop us – even if we knew it was coming and even if we initiated it ourselves.

Are you currently in a transition? How do you know? What was the initial change and how it impacting you?

© Copyright 2025 Bergeron Associates. All rights reserved.
